Central is a unique learning space. Our campus offers a range of facilities to ensure you successfully complete your programme – and enjoy yourself along the way!
Make the most of our extensive facilities during your time at Central. We have a library, common room and computer suites, as well as an extensive plant nursery and horticulture centre. Central is also home to Molyneux Restaurant, which serves delicious regional cuisine.
Central has its own library onsite, housing a collection of books and online resources in a wide range of subject areas.
Our librarian, Sally Smith is available to help you with the following services:
- Reference and research services
- Photocopying and printing
- Work and study areas with computer access
- Access to a selection of research and journal article databases.
You can also borrow books and resources from The Robertson Library, located on our Dunedin Campus.
Student Common Room
Central’s student common room is a great social hub for students who want to catch up with friends, have lunch, a cup of tea or coffee, study or just take some time out from a busy day of classes.
Check your emails, stay in touch with family via Skype and get your assignments completed in our well-resourced computer suite. Central students have full access to the internet and our IT helpdesk is available should you have any computer or connection issues.
Students can also access Wi-fi on campus, so it is easy if you bring your own electronic device.
Central’s horticulture students develop their ‘green thumbs’ and become keen and able propagators in the greenhouses in our commercial student nursery. You’ll gain experiences ranging from eco-sourcing the seeds of local native species to growing hydroponic vegetables and herbs, and a range of plants from cuttings. Much of the fresh produce, including microgreens, is used in our kitchen by the Hospitality students in many of the dishes they create.
We specialise in growing plants suitable for the challenging climate of the region, and those that will flourish with minimal watering.
The Central Plant Nursery hosts two plant sales each year which draw people from throughout Central Otago. The Giant Spring Sale is always on Labour Weekend Saturday, and the autumn sale in March or April.
Bannockburn Horticulture Centre
The Bannockburn Road Horticulture Centre is a thriving 11 hectare horticultural hub where students tend, prune, irrigate and care for 900 sweet cherry trees, and 1900 pinot noir and chardonnay grape vines. The vines produce 1500 bottles of award-winning sustainable Central Otago pinot noir wine. There is also a host of other boutique crops for budding horticulturists to hone their skills on, including saffron, olives and red pears. The real-world experience is reinforced by the actual sale of the produce and products, including from our stall at the gate, which still operates with an honesty-box system.
Located in the heart of Otago Polytechnic's Central Campus, Molyneux Restaurant provides a training ground for our students to move in to careers in hospitality and cookery.
The Restaurant offers a diverse menu that includes some of Central Otago's delicious regional cuisine in a friendly, ambient environment for evening dining. We offer a variety of cuisines, with theme nights including tapas, degustation, international and a la carte menus.
The majority of the ingredients come right from our doorstep, including herbs from our kitchen garden and grapes from our horticulture site that are used to make our very own wine.
