Bannockburn Horticulture Centre

The Bannockburn Road Horticulture Centre is a thriving 10-hectare horticultural hub, consisting of a commercial cherry orchard, a research vineyard and a commercial plant production nursery, where students gain practical hands-on experience, enabling our graduates to be very well prepared for employment in a range of horticultural situations.

In our orchard, students tend, prune, irrigate and care for 1800 sweet cherry trees. The real-world practical fruit production experience is reinforced by the actual sale of the cherries, including from our fruit stall at the gate. Graduates are sought after by the rapidly expanding local industry.

In the research vineyard, students care for 2200 grape vines which produce Central Otago's flagship wine, Pinot Noir, as well as Chardonnay. Students also participate in a range of viticultural trials underway in our vineyard, gaining both technical and practical knowledge.

Central’s horticulture students also develop their ‘green thumbs’ and become keen and able propagators in our commercial plant nursery. This brand new nursery facility, completed in 2020, has a range of modern growing facilities including a fully automated 640m2 glasshouse. In addition to eco-sourcing seeds of local native species, we specialise in growing plants suitable for the challenging climate of the region, and those that will flourish with minimal watering. Along with growing bulk orders of some species, the Central Plant Nursery hosts plant sales each year which draw people from throughout Central Otago.
