Central’s horticulture students develop their ‘green thumbs’ and become keen and able propagators in the amazing greenhouses in our commercial student nursery.
The experiences the students gain range from propagating a huge range of plants from cuttings and seeds, to growing hydroponic vegetables and herbs..
Students are involved in the eco-sourcing and propagation of locally-native species, and the involvement with the Department of Conservation in Project Gold is especially rewarding.
Much of the fresh produce, including microgreens, is used by our Hospitality students in the kitchen and Molyneux Restaurant to create many culinary delights.
The Nursery has local kowhai trees available sourced from old relict trees surviving in the hills surrounding Cromwell. We also specialise in growing plants suitable for the challenging climate of the region, and those which will flourish with minimal watering.
The Central Plant Nursery hosts two plant sales each year which draw people from throughout Central Otago. The Giant Spring Sale is always on Labour Weekend Saturday, and the Autumn Plant and Food Fair in March or April.
Please contact the nursery for sales by appointment at other times. We also grow to order bulk numbers of many species, including:
- Poa cita – silver tussock
- Carex testacea –orange sedge
- Carex secta –purei
- Sophora microphylla – kowhai
- Olearias -many species available
- Lavenders – many cultivars available
Our plants are locally grown for local conditions.
